Windows to the Soul

I met Karen for the first time last year. I remember being immediately drawn in by her beautiful eyes. There’s an ancient proverb that states “The eyes are the windows to the soul“. We say so much with our eyes. They show our true emotions even if we are trying to hide them. The next time that you are having a face to face conversation with someone, look into their eyes. I mean really look into their eyes. I’m willing to bet that if you have never really done this before you will start to “see” people differently. Especially the people that you feel you know really well.

If you’ve been following the blog for a while you most likely have noticed that I have a bit of an obsession with eyes. Whenever I photograph a person I automatically focus on their eyes. I love eyes. When I first met Karen, I was captivated by her beautiful eyes. I was so excited to get to photograph her recently! Not only does she have beautiful eyes but she also possesses a kind and sweet soul.

** Ian and I are hitting the road once again and heading to Cape Breton to photograph a wedding this weekend at the Keltic Lodge. We will be out of the office until Monday, July 19th. All emails and phone calls will be returned at that time. Have a great weekend everyone!

The “N” Family

This is the third (or maybe even the fourth?!) time that we have photographed the “N” family. They have a new family member and it is such an honor to watch families grow and to be able to document the different stages of their children’s lives. Ian and I always have so much fun photographing this family!

I absolutely LOVE little brother’s expression in the shot on the bottom left of this group of four images.

Chubby cheeks make my heart melt :)

Big sister is gonna be a heartbreaker when she grows up.

We went outside to play in the rain for a little bit with big sister. She told me that the raindrops tasted like chocolate :)

Back inside where it was nap time for little brother.

Thank you so much “N” family for inviting us over to take some photographs! As always, we had a blast and are already looking forward to the next time :)

Erin & Darrell’s Engagement & Wedding

I’ve been going through folders of images stored on my backup hard drives and discovered some very special images that I had never posted here on the blog. A few months ago, we had a brief hiatus caused by a bout of the H1N1 virus and then pancreatitis. Blog posts were kind of pushed to the back burner while I recovered. I really wanted to share these images on the blog but have been hesitating because they are from last year. Then I thought that it is better late than never!

Last year, we ran a contest and gave away an engagement photo session and a full day of wedding photography coverage to one lucky couple. Erin and Darrell’s submission won the hearts of our judges. Not only did they win our photography services, they also received a custom made wedding cake donated by the lovely Heather Bown of Sweet Cheeks. Just wait until you see what she created for them. The cake was absolutely gorgeous and completely mouthwatering!

Ian and I first met with Erin and Darrell for their engagement photo session. We had so much fun with them!

After getting to spend a bit of time with Erin and Darrell, Ian and I were really looking forward to photographing their wedding. The wedding ceremony and reception took place in Wallace Bay, Nova Scotia on the lawn of a farmhouse owned by Erin’s family. The location was extra special because it is where she spent most of her childhood summers.

The wedding took place on the hottest day of the year… inland. I felt like I was melting the entire day (I grew up next to the ocean so I am used to a nice cool breeze even on hot summer days).  The cake suffered a little bit of heat damage while being moved outdoors (hence the icing damage on the bottom layer) but it was still gorgeous and one of the best wedding cakes that I have sampled! If you are in need of a custom wedding cake, speciality cookies and/or wedding favours, contact Heather Bown of Sweet Cheeks here in Halifax at sweetcheeks@eastlink.ca or 902-444-2473.

Marcus the Basset Hound

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Marcus walking towards me with his short little legs and I fell in love. I really really really wanted to take him home with me but as usual, Ian said “no”. Since meeting Marcus I am now completely in love with Basset Hounds. These images are part of our “Point Pleasant Dogs” project which is explained here. Thank you so much Jamie for allowing us to snap a few photos of Marcus. I hope that you like them! And if Marcus ever goes missing, you may want to start your search at my house.

Gertie, Sid, Roxy and Lily.

A few weeks ago, during one of our visits to Point Pleasant Park, we were lucky enough to meet Gertie, Sid, Roxy and Lily. Gertie is a bernese mountain dog, Sid is a black lab mix, Roxy is a black lab and Lily is a golden retriever. These images are part of our “Point Pleasant Dogs” project which is explained here. Thank you so much Vanessa and Shauna for allowing Ian and I to spend a bit of time with you and your dogs at the park. I hope that you guys like the photos!

Puppy Love

I am a sucker when it comes to puppies. Any breed. Any size. Any color. I love puppy kisses and puppy breath, the unconditional love that they give, watching them run in their sleep, happy wagging tails… the list goes on and on. If I happen to see a puppy when I am out and about I simply have to meet him or her. Yes, I am one of those annoying people that will come up to you and ask if I can pet your puppy. Or photograph it.

Such was the case with the following photos. Ian and I were on our way out of Point Pleasant Park when I spotted this little guy in the parking lot. I actually made Ian turn the car around and re-enter the parking lot so that I could meet (and hopefully photograph) this puppy. After introducing myself to the puppy’s owner, I got to meet Gucci who immediately showered me with puppy kisses. My camera lens even suffered the effects of an overly excited wet puppy nose and tongue. I’m sorry to say that I can’t remember what breed of dog Gucci’s owner told me that he was. I think that he is a Pit Bull but I’m not positive. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

The following images are part of our “Point Pleasant Dogs” photo project. You can find the description of this project here.

Winner of the Mother’s Day Contest

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there! We received numerous submissions for our “Mother’s Day Contest” and it was really hard to choose only one winner. We are happy to announce that the winner is Jennifer Currie who nominated her fantastic mother, Louise Currie. This is what Jennifer had to say about her mom:

My Mom is the best Mom because she is always there for me, family and friends. She is the most caring, fun, beautiful and intellegent woman in the entire world.  Mom has a huge heart and would do anything for anyone.  She has in the past offered her home to those who were stranded at the airports because of 9-11, and ended up making a long lasting friend.  She volunteers with the company she works for. She’s always baking and cooking new things that are the tastiest treats on the planet. My Mom is the best Mom in the world, I love her to bits !  I hope to someday follow her footsteps and be the best Mom I can be!

Congratulations Jennifer! We’re looking forward to photographing your mom and family!

Introducing Mr. A

At only  5 days old, this little guy was such an amazing model! He pretty much slept through the whole session making my job easy. I instantly fell in love with his cuteness! I wanted to take him home with me but Ian wouldn’t allow it. I think that A’s mom and dad are pretty smitten with him and most likely wouldn’t have allowed it either. I guess I’ll just have to look forward to seeing little A. this weekend when I get to photograph him with his big sister and mom and dad. Don’t worry mom and dad. I promise that I’ll behave myself and I won’t kidnap your adorable little man.

Tanker the Pug

Ian and I have started a fun little photo project that I thought I’d share here on the blog. We are huge animal lovers (have I ever mentioned that we own four cats?) and whenever we are out and about and come across someone walking their dog, I have a habit of stopping to say hi to the dog and giving them a little bit of affection in the form of petting (after I ask the owners permission of course). Ian and I have recently started going for walks at Point Pleasant Park with our camera gear in tow. Lots of people take their dogs for walks at Point Pleasant Park and we have made many four-legged friends. So, the idea of a personal photo project called “Point Pleasant Dogs” just happened naturally. We have started photographing dogs at the park (with the owners permission of course) and then we email the photos to the nice people that allow us to capture a few images of their dogs. I’m still not sure what the final result of this project will be, but we’re having a ton of fun with it while making new friends! So, if you are a dog owner that happens to walk your dog at Point Pleasant Park and you come across us with our cameras, don’t be shy!

Now that I’ve explained our little project it’s time to share a few images. Let me introduce you to Tanker. Tanker is a pug with a face that is too cute for words! We met Tanker at the park and he gladly modeled for us.
